About Amy
Hi there, my name is Amy Huebner and this is my site for all things health related! I’m a holistic health coach, a budding herbalist and an avid runner.
Someday soon my husband and I will be starting a farm so we can grow the herbs we use for our Shire City Herbals creations! My focus is on whole body health and well being. I’m passionate about helping others, like yourself, gain awareness and make healthy lifestyle choices.
My interest in health began as a teenager when I started working at Kirpalu Yoga Center in Lenox, Massachusetts. I realized then that there was a lot more to health and wellness than yearly doctor's visits and prescriptions. I had been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis when I was 9 years old and was told I would be taking synthetic hormones for the rest of my life. The side effects from the medicine left me feeling tired and a good 20 pounds overweight. While working in the kitchen at Kirpalu I switched to a vegetarian diet. I also started running. Several years later I had lost the extra weight, was running 36 miles a week and no longer needed the Synthroid or any other supplements. I had learned a valuable lesson about health: it is the body's default state. Given half a chance the body will heal all by itself! I left Kripalu with plenty of energy to follow another passion of mine, sailing!
I continued to pursue my love for food while working on the engineless Schooner Mary Day out of Camden Maine. I thought, if I can cook on a wood burning stove in a galley without electricity, I can cook anywhere!
And thanks to my training I’ve been able to feed some of the pickiest eaters: kids. For the past 6 years, while earning my bachelors degree in English at NYU, I have worked as a professional nanny in New York City. I have helped raise fourteen children from newborns to preteens and everything in between. Working with children and families has been an invaluable part of my education. The importance of whole, organic foods became very clear to me. The families that ate quality foods together were much calmer, happier and a more cohesive family unit than the ones that did not.
Three years ago I was diagnosed with Systemic Mycosis Candida and once again I adapted my diet and exercise routine and found supplements to support my digestive system. Today I'm very happy to say that I am healthier than ever. Successfully overcoming two chronic illnesses in spite of what doctors told me led me to pursue my certification as a Health Coach from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, the only nutrition school that integrates all the different dietary theories, combining the knowledge of traditional philosophies with modern concepts like the USDA food pyramid, the glycemic index, the Zone and raw foods. I am very excited to share my knowledge and experience with you and I am sure that together, we can overcome whatever is in the way of you living your healthiest life!
